Helping Children Cope After Traumatic Events

The shooting tragedy in Newtown, Connecticut has deeply affected our country. Such  incidents of mass violence can lead to emotional distress. Children are particularly vulnerable to such events, especially when the victims of the violence were children. When such events occur, it can be difficult for parents and teachers to know how to help kids understand and cope with the situation. Here are some Tips for Talking With and Helping Children and Youth Cope After a Disaster or Traumatic Event.

Remember, you are not alone. The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration maintains a disaster distress hotline for help. This toll-free helpline operates 24 hours-a-day, seven days a week. This free, confidential and multilingual, crisis support service is available via telephone (1-800-985-5990) and SMS (Text ‘TalkWithUs’ to 66746) to U.S. residents who are experiencing psychological distress as a result of a natural or man-made disaster, incidents of mass violence or any other disasters. Callers are connected to trained and caring professionals from the closest crisis counseling center in the network. The helpline staff provides confidential counseling, referrals and other needed support services.

IMPORTANT UPDATE:

We have implemented a new student information system, INFINITE CAMPUS. This program replaced Progress Book. Parents will need to print and complete an application in order to get their login information emailed to them. Also, all calendar information will utilize this new program, so at this time we are not able to upload calendar information for events on the schools' sites. Thank you for your patience.

The mission of the Fort Frye Local School District is to enable all students to develop the knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary to live as caring, independent thinking, productive citizens in a changing global society. While our district met 23 of 26 state indicators in the 2011-2012 school year, our students, staff, and community are striving towards "excellence."

The Fort Frye District has one high school that houses grades 7-12 and three elementary schools for kindergarten through 6th grade. The district has a total of 84 faculty and professional staff members and 78 support personnel. Even though we are a small school district of approximately 1026 students, the 18 full-time bus routes cover 176 square miles in the Fort Frye School District.
